MARBIE COMMERCIALS

JAN 2019

Like my last project this is a parody. In this case I'm making fun of the origins of Barbie, after learning that Barbie was inspired by a call girl from comic strip for men.  In this project I continue to explore the universe that I created in my Maricruz Cruz project. I feel like this universe dramatizes some of the things from this world that I find problematic.  A way that I like to show this alternate universe is by the use of colour. The colours that I use are a bit usual such a using purple for the lips and yellow tights. I have tried my best to limit my colours to four. In my first project I used red, yellow, blue and white, all primary and pure colours.  The colours I used in this project are purple, turquoise, orange, and grey, they are all mixtures of colours. The reason for this is to show that in contrast with my last project this story is a bit more messed up and has darker undertones.
A lot of what has inspired my project is the pop culture from the recent years, from the commercials being inspired by Barbie commercials from the 90s and early 2000s, and the news videos being inspired by TMZ. While making this project I came across artist that have done similar work. These artists include Racheal Maclean and Ryan Trecartin. Racheal Maclean is my favourite out of the two of them. I love the use of animation in her films and the way she uses make up and a greenscreen to transport the audience into a whole different universe. I was also happy to learn that she plays most of the characters in her films, I feel like this allows her to have more control of what she´s creating. Learning this encouraged me to do the same. Ryan Tracartin´s work is much messier than Rachel Maclean (the make-up is not as clean, and the editing is very rough). Even though I prefer the visuals in Rachel Maclean´s work I thought I would have to use some of Triacetin’s techniques to portray the imperfections of the characters in my story.  For the exhibition I was inspired by Tracy Emin´s bed to create a bedroom for the creator of Marbie. Like Emin´s piece I filled the room with hints for the to get audience an idea of how she´s been living.
My project follows the story of a young women (known as the creator of Marbie) after being kicked out of her house and I am trying to make it on her own. She decides to start her own toy brand called Marbie. However, the creator of Marbie is not exactly a sane person and combined with a low budget, her whole company turns out to be a disaster. In my final piece which takes place in her bedroom, we see the alcohol bottles and signs of her party lifestyle, in all the mess there are articles that were written about her and it shows how she is portrayed in the media. In the bedroom there is also a television showing her commercials and some of her interviews.
I feel like for this project my strongest point is the story which I plan to further develop it. Initially I wasn´t planning to include anything about the creator of Marbie, but after I started thinking about the commercials, I thought it was important to include her. The most exciting thing about this is to create the story, I have fun imagining how this whole universe is and about all the things that could happen.  I feel like I have improved on my editing, but I could still be better and I would like to add more animation and possibly start using a greenscreen.
